What are Porcelain Crowns, aka Caps?
Crowns will strengthen and protect your whole tooth structure. The crowns are available in a wide range of sizes and shapes with the tooth-colored crows being the most sought after because they are virtually indistinguishable from the natural teeth.
It is good to note that crowns are not a permanent solution. They wear out and need to be replaced at one point in time. You can, however, prolong their life by maintaining good oral hygiene, not smoking and ensuring you get regular dental checkups. With proper care, you can get years of use out of the porcelain crowns or caps.
Why would someone need a crown?
Anybody can be a suitable candidate for the crowns but first you need a thorough checkup to determine if crowns will be ideal for you. Crowns are ideal if you have:
- Broken or fractured teeth
- Faulty fillings
- A tooth with a root canal
- Need cosmetic enhancement
What is getting a crown like?
Thanks to our powerful CEREC technology, at King West Dentistry, we can install porcelain crowns in a single appointment. You will only need to come back for a second appointment if the crown has to be made in an off-site dental laboratory. In this case, we will take accurate impressions/molds of your teeth to help create a perfect crown that not only improves the function and look of your teeth but also feels comfortable in your mouth.
Porcelain Crowns Procedure
The procedure starts with the numbing of the affected tooth. Our in-house dentist will then take out any decay as well as any fillings. The tooth is then cleaned and shaped to accommodate the porcelain crown perfectly. If CEREC technology is not applicable, the dentist will place a temporary crown over the prepared tooth. The temporary crown will be replaced with the permanent one when you come back at a later date.
During the follow-up appointment, the dentist will first take out the temporary crown and then insert the permanent crown on the tooth. Your comfort is our priority at King West Dentistry and we always ensure the new crown has the right spacing and gives you a normal bite.
We want the crown to serve you for many years to come. This is why at the end of the procedure our dentist will give you a set of instructions on how to care for the crown during and after healing. We highly recommend that you adhere to our instructions and follow them to the letter to avoid premature problems.
