Nitrous Oxide Sedation
Nitrous Oxide Sedation
Nitrous Oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, has been used in dentistry for many years. This sedative is comprised of N2O and has certain features that make it ideal for sedating patients for a dental procedure. To start with, nitrous oxide is non-flammable and colourless. It has a somewhat sweet odour and taste that is pleasant for the dentist and patient. N2O is used as a sedative due to its excellent analgesic and anesthetic properties. It gives patients that feeling of euphoria which makes it ideal as anaesthesia for certain dental surgeries. When patients are given N2O before a procedure, they experience the 'happy feeling' with less anxiety and pain throughout the procedure. Many dentists use this anesthesia to help their patients relax and be cooperative in order to successfully complete their dental treatments. This sedation is often used for younger patients who are traumatized by dental treatments. Adult patients who are anxious, disabled or have low pain tolerance can also benefit from this sedation.
