What are Composite Fillings?
Composite fillings restore the function and appearance of a tooth affected by decay or minor damage. Made from a tooth-coloured resin, they bond directly to the tooth and are matched to your natural shade, so the repair blends in seamlessly.
There are several filling materials available today, each with its own advantages. At King West Dentistry, we’ll walk you through the options, explain the pros and cons of each, and help you choose the filling that’s right for your tooth, your bite, and your budget.
Why would you need Composite Fillings?
Not every cavity or chip looks the same, and the reason you need a filling affects how your dentist approaches the repair. Composite is versatile enough to handle decay, damage, and even minor cosmetic issues, all with the same natural-looking material. Here are the most common reasons patients come in for a composite filling:
- Visible pits or holes in a tooth
- Sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods
- A rough or jagged edge you can feel with your tongue
- A chip or crack from an injury or biting something hard
- Dark spots or staining on a chewing surface
- Food that repeatedly gets stuck in the same spot
The Composite Filling Process
Getting a composite filling is usually quick and comfortable, and most are completed in a single visit.
Numbing: We gently numb the area so you stay comfortable throughout.
Removing decay: The dentist removes the decayed or damaged part of the tooth and cleans the area.
Placing the filling: The tooth-coloured composite is applied in layers and shaped to match your tooth.
Curing & polishing: A special light hardens the material, then we polish it so it feels smooth and blends in.
